Level Up Your Digital Skills for Free at Weymouth’s New Hub

Starting this month, residents of Weymouth have a brand new opportunity to build digital confidence, gain vital skills for work and daily life, and connect with support — all for free. Dorset Council is launching the Weymouth Digital Skills Hub at Weymouth Library, running from 15 September through to December.

What is the Weymouth Digital Skills Hub?

The hub is a learning and support initiative designed to help people of all levels — from complete beginners to those looking to sharpen professional digital skills. It offers a range of services, including:

  • One‑to‑one Digital Champion appointments – get personalised help with devices, software and specific questions.
  • Drop‑in Co‑Learning Space – an informal setting where people can learn alongside others, with help available from a Digital Champion.
  • Digital Discovery Courses – more structured sessions suitable for beginners and intermediate users to build fundamentals.
  • Digital Employability Skills – courses focused on CV writing, job search, and interview preparation.
  • Microsoft for Beginners – workshops on Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excel for Professionals – more advanced sessions for data work, professional/business tasks.
  • Tech Talks – sessions on digital topics and local opportunities.
  • Business Masterclasses & Accelerator Courses – for entrepreneurs or businesses wishing to scale, innovate or improve their digital tool‑use.

Extra Benefits

  • If you sign up for a Digital Discovery or Digital Employability Skills course, you’ll be entered into a prize draw to win a tablet, awarded after completion.
  • Learners without regular access to a computer or tablet may be eligible for a free tablet or a refurbished laptop upon completing the course.
  • Every Friday, 10 am‑2 pm, the Hub will host Community Connect Days, a drop‑in event where various support services (digital help, financial wellbeing, volunteering, etc.) come together in a welcoming, relaxed environment.

Why This Matters

Dorset Council notes that digital skills are essential in modern life—from applying for jobs, managing finances and accessing public services, to staying socially connected and using business tools. The Weymouth Digital Skills Hub aims to ensure that nobody is left behind, whether they are starting from scratch or wanting to build on existing skills.

The hub is part of Dorset Council’s wider Economic Growth Strategy, which seeks to improve skills provision and unlock opportunities in Weymouth and the surrounding region.

How to Take Part

  • The hub opens on 15 September 2025 and runs through December.
  • The full timetable of courses and events is available on the Weymouth Digital Skills Hub webpage.
  • Bookings can be made online, in person at Weymouth Library, or via the “digital hotline” on 01305 221048.
  • To see if you qualify for a free device, email digitaldorset@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk

Funding and Partnership

  • The initiative is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (SPF), which aims to reduce regional inequalities and invest in community wellbeing, business growth, and skills development. Dorset Council is using its allocation to deliver projects like this across Dorset.
  • It is a partnership involving Dorset Council, Citizens Advice, Volunteer Centre Dorset, and local community groups, especially in the Community Connect Fridays events.

The Weymouth Digital Skills Hub offers a valuable, inclusive way for people in Weymouth to grow their digital confidence without cost, with the bonus of practical tools and connection to wider support. Whether you need a little help getting started or you’re ready to level up for work or business, this is a strong step in supporting digital inclusion in Dorset.
