Residents in Weymouth will vote next month on whether to adopt the town’s first Neighbourhood Plan, following its approval by an independent examiner and Dorset Council. The referendum will take place on Thursday 11 December 2025, with voter registration closing on 25 November.
If approved, the plan will become part of the formal planning framework used by Dorset Council when deciding planning applications in Weymouth. It includes policies on housing mix, green spaces, development sites and community infrastructure.
During examination, several changes were made, including removing the proposed Principal Residency policy, adjusting site allocations, and setting requirements for affordable housing on new greenfield developments. The plan also designates a number of local green spaces for protection.
Residents will be able to vote in person, by post, or via proxy. Polling stations will open from 7am to 10pm, and voter ID will be required.
The referendum gives the community direct influence over how the town develops in the coming years, with the outcome determining whether the plan carries legal weight in future planning decisions.
