Dorset News was recently invited to visit The Veterans Hub in Weymouth — a unique, community-driven organisation that has become a vital lifeline for former service personnel across Dorset. Believed to be the only one of its kind in the country, the Veterans Hub offers comprehensive support for veterans and their families, providing a range of services from practical assistance to emotional well-being support.
The Hub is operated by six full-time staff members and supported by an incredible team of over 30 regular volunteers.
Together, they provide a safe, welcoming space for more than 300 active veterans currently registered with the Hub. “Our goal is to make sure no veteran feels forgotten,” said Rachel, one of the Hub’s dedicated staff members who welcomed Dorset News during our visit. “We’re here to offer support, friendship, and community to those who’ve given so much.”
“Wide-Ranging Services for Veterans“
The Veterans Hub delivers an impressive range of services, working with outside agencies to ensure veterans have access to the support they need. This includes physiotherapy and wellbeing support, bereavement services, counselling sessions, and access to Dorset’s First Point and other partner agencies.
Our reporter Kallum also had the opportunity to speak with Jim, one of the volunteers at The Veterans Hub, who helps run their bereavement group on alternate Thursday evenings. He was deeply touched by some of the stories shared by members, and he spoke about how important it is to have a safe, supportive space for bereaved widows to come together, share their feelings, and not feel alone in their grief.
The Hub’s facilities also include a fully equipped gym, helping veterans maintain their physical and mental well-being. A Café, Garden, and Community Space
Open Monday to Friday from 10 am–4 pm and Saturday from 9 am–3 pm, The Veterans Hub is more than a service centre — it’s a vibrant community hub.
The on-site café serves as a warm gathering spot, while the garden, maintained by volunteers, produces fresh vegetables used in the café’s meals. The café also operates a ‘pay-it-forward’ scheme, ensuring that anyone who comes through the door in need of a meal will receive one. “We never want anyone to go hungry,” Rachel explained. “Thanks to the generosity of others, we can make sure everyone who needs a meal gets one.”
Dog-Friendly with a Dedicated Food Bank. In keeping with its inclusive spirit, The Veterans Hub is dog-friendly and even operates its own dog food bank to support veterans struggling to feed their pets. Donations are always welcome and can be dropped off at the Hub’s Portland Road shop in Weymouth.
Funding and Growth The Veterans Hub’s incredible work is sustained by community donations and several generous grants, including £235,000 from the National Lottery and £30,000 from The Veterans Foundation. These funds help maintain and expand vital services for local veterans and their families.
The Hub also operates a pre-loved items shop, which not only raises funds but also offers affordable goods for the community.
Although the Hub primarily serves veterans, members of the public are welcome to access certain onsite services, helping foster stronger community connections and mutual support.
“We’re proud of what we’ve built here,” said one of the directors. “It’s a safe, inclusive space where Everyone — veteran or civilian — can find support and a sense of belonging.”
Our visit to The Veterans Hub left a lasting impression. From the warm welcome to the dedicated facilities and the clear passion of those who work and volunteer there, it’s evident that this is far more than a service centre — it’s a community of care, compassion, and connection.
The Veterans Hub stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when people come together for a common cause — and Dorset is fortunate to have the Veterans Hub based here.
