A young disabled man was trapped inside a toilet at The Swan Wetherspoons pub in Weymouth for more than 40 minutes after a faulty lock jammed — prompting a rescue by Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service.
The incident happened at around 3pm on Sunday, October 26th, when the man, who has additional needs, became stuck inside the accessible toilet and was unable to get out. His parents, who were with him at the time, alerted pub staff for help.

After several unsuccessful attempts to open the door, firefighters were called to the scene and managed to release the young man unharmed but visibly distressed.
His parents later said that staff at the pub admitted they were aware the toilet door was faulty before the incident but had not taken any action to repair it or warn customers.
One of the parents said:
> “It’s completely unacceptable. They told us they knew the door was faulty, yet they let people continue to use it. It was frightening for our son, and it could have been avoided entirely.”
The family described the ordeal as “distressing and humiliating” and are calling on Wetherspoons to review safety procedures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to assist in releasing a person trapped in a pub toilet in Weymouth on Sunday afternoon.
We have reached out to Wetherspoons for comment.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We were called to a pub on St Thomas Street, Weymouth at 3.33pm yesterday (Sunday) to free someone who was locked in a toilet cubicle. A crew from Weymouth used small tools to get the door open and free the person, with our stop at 4.01pm.”
