This November, Weymouth is once again gearing up to host what organisers hope will be a record-breaking celebration: an Elf World Record Attempt, as part of its annual festive light switch-on and Christmas extravaganza. Locals and visitors alike are invited to don elf costumes, get creative, and join in a day of workshops, parades, music and merriment — all in a bid to turn the seaside town into the UK’s most elf-filled place.
The event, organised by We Are Weymouth, promises to bring together hundreds — maybe thousands — of participants. On their Facebook page, We Are Weymouth has teased the possibility that the national broadcaster might even be filming the attempt.
What’s Happening (and When)
Saturday 29th November
According to the official schedule shared widely (including by local event listings) the day will look something like this:
09:00 – 12:00 — Free elf-themed workshops: attendees can craft elf hats, ears and collars; enjoy face-painting; and fully transform into their festive alter-egos.
12:00 – 13:00 — Registration at Weymouth Pavilion: participants receive wristbands to be officially counted in the world-record attempt. A photo opportunity will follow at 1 pm.
13:15 – 14:00 — Dorset’s Largest Elf Parade: the streets of Weymouth will ring with elvish cheer as costumed participants parade through the town — complete with marching band and a visit from Santa in his sleigh.
14:00 – 17:00 — Main-stage entertainment: expect pantomime performers, local choirs and dance groups, street performers, stilt-walkers, buskers, and festive music. Local shops and eateries will join in the fun.
17:00 — Official Christmas lights (and giant Christmas Elf) switch-on on New Bond Street — led by the mayor, winners of a children’s competition, and the pantomime cast. The evening continues with a performance from party band The Hooked, followed by elf-themed parties at pubs and clubs across Weymouth.
Beyond the main event, the fun continues: there will be an Elf Trail running through the Christmas period (with a draw held around New Year for prizes, discounts and local attraction tickets), and a “Christmas Sparkle” competition where businesses compete to decorate their windows in the most festive way.
Why It Matters: More Than Just Costumes and Candy Canes
For Weymouth, this celebration is more than a festive gimmick — it’s a statement of community spirit. The town has long prided itself on creativity, and the Elf World Record Attempt combines that flair with a chance to make history. As The Table Read magazine recently described it: “a call to action” for residents and visitors to come together and “claim the title of Elf Capital of the UK.”
It’s also a chance to boost local businesses — shops, cafes, eateries, pubs and venues around Weymouth are encouraged to join in, offering festive specials, hosting parties, or dressing up to take part. The event injects energy and holiday cheer into the town centre, drawing crowds who might stay for lunch, shopping, or a festive drink while soaking up the atmosphere.
How to Be Part of It
Keep an eye on the social-media channels of We Are Weymouth for registration details, especially if you plan to be counted in the world-record attempt.
Come early (workshops start at 9 AM) if you want to get your elf gear sorted — hats, ears, collars, face-paint and festive accessories.
Make sure to be at Weymouth Pavilion by noon to register and receive your wristband for counting.
Dress to impress — elves of all ages and abilities are welcome. After all, the event is as much about fun and community spirit as it is about breaking a record.
What’s Next: Eyes on the Prize
With local promoters, residents and visitors already talking about it on social media, expectations are high. One recent post shared by We Are Weymouth reads: “We’re starting to see our Elf World Record Attempt pop up everywhere”, and hints that major coverage — possibly including the BBC — might be on its way.
It’s shaping up to be a day of joy, community and festive mischief — whether you’re making elf ears, marching in the parade, or simply watching the lights go on. Either way, Weymouth looks ready to deliver one of the most memorable Christmas kickoff events in Dorset this year.
