Weymouth has been identified as the most dangerous medium-sized town in Dorset, according to new data published by CrimeRate.
The analysis, covering the 12 months to August 2025, places Weymouth at the top of its category based on a combination of recorded incidents and the severity of offences.
CrimeRate reports an overall rate of 48 crimes per 1,000 residents in key categories, with 1,916 recorded violence and sexual-offence cases, equating to 34 offences per 1,000 people. The figure is significantly higher than that of many other similar-sized towns in the county.
While Dorset’s county-wide average crime rate stands at 51 per 1,000 people across all areas, Weymouth’s rate in serious crime categories and its weighted “crime risk score” position it at the top of the medium-town list under CrimeRate’s methodology.
Tourism and Night-Time Economy Cited
As one of Dorset’s busiest coastal destinations, Weymouth attracts large visitor numbers, particularly during the summer. CrimeRate notes that crime “naturally concentrates” in areas with high footfall, nightlife, and visitor activity.
Local authority figures have previously highlighted Weymouth & Portland as having the highest levels of anti-social behaviour in the county, supporting the trend reflected in the latest data.
Context and Caveats
Despite the ranking, analysts emphasise that the classification does not suggest Weymouth is unsafe by national standards. Dorset remains one of the safer regions in the UK, and crime rates in Weymouth are considerably lower than those recorded in many major towns and cities.
Crime levels vary significantly across neighbourhoods, and residents are encouraged to consult ward-level data for a more precise picture.
Impact for Residents and Visitors
Authorities advise that individuals should remain mindful of their personal safety, particularly in town centre areas with a strong nighttime economy and during peak visitor periods. Common-sense precautions such as travelling in groups and avoiding poorly lit areas late at night are recommended.
House-hunters and new residents are encouraged to review detailed local crime maps rather than relying solely on town-wide averages.
Weymouth’s designation reflects a higher concentration of serious offences relative to other medium-sized towns in Dorset, influenced in part by tourism and night-time activity. While the ranking may draw attention, officials and analysts stress that the town remains safe in broader national terms.
