A major new Tesco Superstore could soon form the centrepiece of a large mixed-use development to the north of Littlemoor, near Weymouth. The proposal, currently under review by Dorset Council, forms part of the ongoing Littlemoor North expansion, a project designed to deliver new housing, retail, and community facilities for the growing area.
Planning application P/RES/2025/05831 outlines a 25,000 sq ft Tesco store as the anchor tenant within the Littlemoor North development. The proposed site lies north of Littlemoor Road, near the Bincombe Bumps roundabout, which connects Weymouth to Dorchester via the A354.
According to documents and reports from Dorset Council, the new supermarket would be joined by a Starbucks drive-through, several trade and retail units, and a care home, forming part of a “local centre” to support the hundreds of new homes already approved in the surrounding area.

The Tesco proposal follows earlier planning consent (granted in 2022) for around 500 new homes, a primary school, and community infrastructure in the same northern zone. Developers Abri and Lovell Partnerships are leading the housing phase, while Dorset Council’s local plan identifies Littlemoor North as a key location for sustainable expansion.
Local reaction has been mixed but engaged. Some residents have welcomed the convenience and new jobs the Tesco could bring, while others have raised concerns about increased traffic around the A354 and potential competition for small local shops.
The supermarket would serve both new and existing residents, reducing the need to travel into Weymouth town centre for larger shopping trips. The site plan includes pedestrian routes, parking, and landscaping intended to integrate the new centre into the surrounding community.
Public consultation on the application remains open until 7 November 2025, allowing residents to comment directly through Dorset Council’s planning portal. A final decision is expected later this year or in early 2026.
