A section of St Thomas Street in Weymouth has been closed to the public following serious safety concerns, prompting a response from emergency services.

The closure affects the stretch of St Thomas Street between Tesco and the Town Bridge. The decision was made after it was discovered that a glass window above the shops is not securely fixed and is at risk of falling onto the busy street below.

The unsecured glass poses a significant danger to pedestrians, particularly given the high footfall in the town centre. As a precaution, the area has been cordoned off while the situation is assessed and remedial work is arranged.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said:

“We received a call at 15:38 to St Thomas Street, Weymouth, to reports of debris falling from a building. Officers have closed that section of road to keep members of the public safe.”

Emergency services attended the scene to ensure the closure was put in place quickly, with pedestrian diversions established around the affected area. Some shops may have restricted access while safety measures remain in force.

The street will stay closed until the glass window has been secured and the risk to the public has been fully removed. Members of the public are advised to follow local signage and avoid the area while work is ongoing.
