Local Runners Set to Tackle 72-Hour Ultra Challenge for Weymouth Causes
A determined group of local runners are lacing up their trainers once again as they prepare to take on an even tougher endurance challenge in support of two important Weymouth causes.
Last year, the team — made up of Josh Jenkins, Biggus Diccus, Lee Beardmore and Shaun Brown — successfully completed the formidable “4 miles every 4 hours for 48 hours” running challenge. This year, they’re back, and they’re raising the bar significantly.
Starting on 27 February, the four will run 4 miles every 4 hours for a gruelling 72 hours, covering the equivalent of three full marathons in just three days.
As with last year, the challenge is about more than physical endurance. The runners are raising funds for causes close to their hearts, choosing to keep their efforts firmly rooted in the local community.
Half of the money raised will go to Weymouth Street Pastors, a volunteer group that provides care, support and a reassuring presence for people enjoying nights out in the town. The remaining 50 per cent will support their friend Rob McIlroy, who is currently fundraising for a much-needed new prosthetic leg.
Speaking ahead of the challenge, the team said they are grateful for the support they’ve already received and are looking forward to sharing updates — including details of the runs themselves and, fittingly, the celebratory beer at the end.
They are also extending an open invitation to anyone who would like to join them during training runs or even during the challenge itself, saying the company and encouragement would be hugely appreciated.
