Local Boxing Club Puts Town Fighters on the Map

A Weymouth boxing club is continuing to build its reputation at home and abroad after an exciting and memorable trip to Poland for a landmark international tournament.

Grey Ranks Boxing Crew recently travelled to Wodzisław Śląski to compete in the 10th anniversary edition of the prestigious Boxing Day Tournament, an event that brought together fighters from across Europe. Despite snowy conditions and a high level of competition, the trip proved to be a valuable experience both in and out of the ring.

The team recorded two wins and three defeats on points against tough opposition. Albert Davies and Akhmed Tagirov both produced composed and determined performances against their Polish opponents to secure victories for the club. Reuben Allington started strongly and enjoyed an impressive first round before an old nose injury resurfaced, forcing the ringside doctor to stop the contest.

Scott Lyones narrowly lost on a split decision after a closely fought bout, while Tyler Groves, competing in the very first fight of his career, faced a challenging test against an experienced Ukrainian southpaw and was edged out on points.

Head coach Martin praised all of his boxers for their commitment and effort throughout the tournament.

> “Congratulations to all my boxers because they couldn’t have boxed better,” he said. “Everyone showed 100 per cent determination and set such a high bar with their performances.”

He also paid tribute to the support received in the corner during the event.

> “Thank you to Eugeniusz Sarota for his help in the corner, as always bringing top-quality, experienced advice.”

The club extended its thanks to Patryk Blasik and the hosts at Odra Wodzislaw Boxing Club for organising what was widely regarded as an outstanding event.

> “Massive congratulations to Patryk Blasik and thank you to Odra Wodzislaw Boxing Club for all the support and for organising such a fantastic tournament,” added Martin.

Beyond the results, the trip was seen as another step forward in the club’s development, strengthening international links and creating lasting memories for everyone involved. Grey Ranks Boxing Crew said they were grateful for the warm welcome, the high standard of competition and the opportunity to test themselves on an international stage.

More photos from top-class photographer Marek Mildner are expected to be released shortly.

As the club looks ahead to the rest of the season, the experience gained in Poland is set to play a key role in the continued progress of its fighters — proving once again that grassroots boxing can open doors far beyond the local area.
