They’re Back: Traffic Misery Returns to Lanehouse Rocks Road, Weymouth

Weymouth drivers are facing fresh travel disruption this week as Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) begins a new phase of roadworks on Lanehouse Rocks Road, bringing six days of likely congestion to an already busy route.

The works began today, with two-way temporary traffic lights now in place at the junction of Fremantle Road and Lanehouse Rocks Road, stretching up towards the Tesco petrol station. One side of the carriageway is completely closed, forcing all traffic through a narrow single-lane section — and creating significant delays during peak hours.

To make matters worse, this route is currently being used as a diversion for ongoing Wessex Water works on nearby Chickerell Road, funnelling even more traffic onto Lanehouse Rocks Road and adding to the growing frustration among residents and commuters.

The street works permit for SSEN is set to expire on Sunday, 22nd September, but many remain doubtful the work will be completed on time. SSEN has developed a reputation locally for overrunning, with previous projects along the same stretch taking longer than expected and causing weeks of gridlock.

Over the past year, Lanehouse Rocks Road has seen multiple sets of roadworks, often coinciding with school runs and evening traffic. Locals have voiced their concerns over the repeated disruption, with many calling for better coordination between utility companies and more effective traffic management.

Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area where possible, plan ahead, and allow extra time — particularly during rush hour and school commute times.
