Essential Ferry Bridge Repairs to Begin on Monday, Causing Traffic Disruption

Essential repair works on Ferry Bridge are set to begin on Monday, 19 January, in a major project aimed at safeguarding the long-term safety and sustainability of the key transport link between Portland and Weymouth.

The bridge, which has been in service for more than 40 years, will undergo vital maintenance following inspections that identified the need for remedial work. Dorset Council has confirmed that traffic management measures will be in place from Monday 19 January until Sunday 1 March.

During this period, one lane of the A354 will be closed, with 24-hour two-way traffic lights controlling vehicle movement across the bridge. Pedestrian and cyclist access will be maintained throughout the works, while abnormal heavy loads will not be permitted to use the crossing.

Most of the repair work will take place beneath the bridge and is not expected to be visible to road users. However, motorists are warned that there may be short periods of additional traffic management after 1 March, as well as two brief overnight closures planned for April to complete specific elements of the project.

Drivers are being urged to plan ahead, allow extra time for journeys, and expect delays, particularly during peak travel times. Residents and visitors are also encouraged to continue supporting local businesses in Weymouth and Portland while the essential works are carried out.

Further information about the project is available on the Dorset Council website.
