Police stopped a delivery vehicle on Weymouth seafront at around 12pm today after checks revealed it was being driven without valid insurance.
Officers seized the vehicle, which was later confirmed to be operated by a driver working for DPD.
As a result of the seizure, the driver was instructed to unload all parcels from the van. Approximately 80 packages were removed and placed on the public footpath outside the Carlton Hotel, prompting concern from passers-by. Many of the parcels are believed to contain Christmas presents, given the time of year and the volume of deliveries.
Witnesses said the parcels remained under the driver’s supervision while arrangements were made for collection. At 1:41pm, the driver was still on scene awaiting the arrival of another van to retrieve the packages and continue deliveries.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said officers regularly carry out roadside checks to ensure vehicles are insured and roadworthy, adding that driving without insurance can lead to vehicle seizure and further penalties.
DPD has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
The situation caused brief disruption along the seafront but no injuries were reported, and the parcels were expected to be transferred once a replacement vehicle arrived.
