The Boxing Day swim at West Bay has been officially cancelled, organisers Bridport Round Table have confirmed, following a series of tragic events at sea across the region.
The decision was described as a difficult one, taken after careful consideration of incidents linked to other local sea swim events held yesterday. Tragically, swimmers lost their lives, and emergency services were required to respond in extremely challenging and distressing circumstances.
Out of respect for those who were lost, and for the emergency crews who attended, organisers felt it would be inappropriate for the event to go ahead.
Although sea conditions at West Bay are improved today, Bridport Round Table stressed that safety must always come first. Given the wider context and emotional impact of recent events, proceeding with a large public swim did not feel right.
The safety of swimmers, volunteers, spectators, and the wider public remains paramount.
The cancellation comes amid heightened concern along the southwest coast.
In Devon, two people were reported missing at sea during recent incidents and we understand that the search was called off, underlining the dangers of winter swimming and coastal conditions that can change rapidly, even when the weather appears settled. As a result, several other planned or informal sea swim events have also been cancelled or reassessed.
While the swim itself will not take place, visitors are still welcome to enjoy a day out at West Bay. The weather is bright, albeit cold, and local food and coffee kiosks are open. Organisers and local authorities are, however, urging people not to enter the sea, even for informal or unplanned swims.
Looking ahead, the next planned local sea swim event is due to take place in Lyme Regis on New Year’s Day, subject to conditions and further safety assessments.
Bridport Round Table thanked the community for their understanding and support during what has been a deeply difficult period, emphasising that the decision was made with compassion, respect, and public safety at its heart.
