“Cash Is No Longer King”

Weymouth, Dorset – July 2025 — In a decision that’s sparked both debate and frustration among residents and visitors, Weymouth Town Council has voted to increase the fee for using public toilets from 30p to 50p. The move, which passed with eight councillors in favour and one against, will also see a shift to card-only payments, effectively eliminating the option to pay with cash.

The lone dissenting vote came from Councillor Louie O’Leary, who voiced concerns about accessibility, digital exclusion, and the increasing cost of basic public services.

“Cash Is No Longer King”

Council officials defended the change, citing rising maintenance costs, the need for vandalism prevention, and a desire to modernise facilities. councillors remarked, “This decision brings Weymouth in line with other towns that have adopted contactless systems to streamline operations and reduce overheads.”

But the decision has drawn mixed reactions from the community. Critics argue that card-only access could disproportionately impact elderly users, those without contactless cards, and individuals who rely on cash, particularly in emergencies.

“I don’t mind paying 50p if it keeps the toilets clean,” said a local business owner. “But refusing cash? That’s going too far. Not everyone wants to tap a card for a quick visit to the loo.”

A Broader Trend

Weymouth’s decision follows a growing national trend of councils moving toward cashless public infrastructure. Supporters argue it reduces theft and simplifies maintenance, while opponents warn of a creeping digital divide.

As tourist season peaks in Weymouth, the new pricing and payment system will be closely watched. For now, those planning a seaside visit are advised to bring a debit or credit card — or risk getting caught short.
